INORGANIC CHEMICALS (ANNUAL)
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on production, and quantity and value of shipments of industrial inorganic chemicals. The United
States Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
All companies that manufacture selected inorganic chemicals in the United States (most but not all are in SIC 2812, 2816, and
2819). In 1993, shipments of inorganic chemicals amounted to nearly $18 billion.
CONTENT
Product data are collected for over 100 types of chemicals. Data at the 7- digit SIC level include total quantity and value of
shipments, quantity consumed within the manufacturing plant, quantity of inter-plant transfers, and quantity of production.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the calendar year. Data on inorganic chemicals have been
collected since 1941.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of all 950 known manufacturers. New companies are identified and added to the survey from the
Statistical Standard Establishment List, and firms reporting chemical shipments on the latest census of manufactures and annual
survey of manufactures. Firms are contacted using form MA28A. Data may be revised if firms later provide corrected data.
Annual data are compared with the latest census of manufactures or the annual survey of manufactures to reconcile any
differences between the series.
PHARMACEUTICAL PREPARATIONS
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on the value of shipments of pharmaceutical preparations. The United States Code, Title 13,
authorizes this survey and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
Firms that manufacture pharmaceutical preparations in the United States, except biological products, and have 5 or more
employees (most but not all are in SIC 2834). In 1993 the value of covered shipments exceeded $44 billion.
CONTENT
Total value of shipments by type (prescription, non-prescription, and bulk) are collected for over 100 types of pharmaceutical
products at the 7-digit SIC level.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar year. Data on pharmaceutical preparations
have been collected since 1962.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of 701 manufacturers. Firms are identified from the latest census of manufactures and annual
survey of manufactures. Firms are contacted using form MA28G. Data may be revised if reporting firms later provide
corrected data. Data for small firms are estimated based on their 1987 Census of Manufactures responses and the trend of
firms reporting annually. Annual figures are compared with data collected from the latest census of manufactures or the annual
survey of manufactures to reconcile any differences between the series.
