1245. Broadwoven and Knit Fabrics--Shipments, Foreign Trade, and Apparent Consumption
[Fabric blends as shown in the CIR report, MQ22T are reported
based on the chief weight of the fiber; whereas, fabrics blends
as shown for imports are based on the chief value of the fiber.
Apparent consumption represents new domestic supply and is derived
by subtracting exports for the total manufacturers' shipments
plus imports. For description of methodology, see below table]

NA Not available.
1 For broadwoven fabrics, represents production of gray broadwoven fabrics; import and export data represent gray as well as finished broadwoven fabrics.
|
2 Dollar value represents the c.i.f. (cost, insurance, and freight) at the first port of entry in the United States plus calculated import duty.
|
3 Includes all cotton and chiefly cotton mixed with manmade fiber.

BROADWOVEN FABRICS
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on the production of broadwoven fabrics and the number of active weaving looms. The United States
Code, Title 13, requires this survey and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
Companies manufacturing broadwoven fabrics (gray) in the U.S. (most but not all are in SIC 221-223, and 2296), except
very small firms (generally less than 5 employees) for which census of manufactures data were from administrative records. In
the first quarter of 1993, almost 93 thousand looms produced 4.1 million square yards of fabric.
CONTENT
Data are collected for over 100 types of fabric. Product data at the 7-digit SIC level include quantity of fabric produced and
number of looms operating. Additional data collected on looms include; number in place and hours of operation by type of
loom.
FREQUENCY
Quarterly; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar quarter. Data on broadwoven fabrics have
been collected since 1943.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back survey of 350 manufacturers. Companies are identified from the latest census of manufactures and
contacted using form MQ22T. Quarterly data may be revised if firms later provide corrected data.
*
KNIT FABRICS
PURPOSE
To provide detailed data on the production of selected knit fabrics. The United States Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey
and provides for mandatory responses.
COVERAGE
Firms producing knit fabrics (most but not all are in SIC 2257-8), except small firms (generally less than 5 employees) for
which census of manufactures data were from administrative records. In 1992, 22,325 knitting machines produced over 2
billion pounds of fabric.
CONTENT
Data are collected for over 50 types of knit fabric. Data collected at the 7-digit SIC level include production, number of
knitting machines, internal consumption, and method of distribution.
FREQUENCY
Annually; reported data are for activities taking place during the previous calendar year. Data on knit fabric production have
been collected by the Bureau of the Census since 1966.
METHODS
A mail-out/mail-back cutoff survey of 725 knit fabric manufacturers. Firms are identified from the latest census of manufactures
and private sources. Firms are contacted using form MA22K. Data may be revised if firms later provide corrected data.
