Casco Antiguo's cathedral on the central square of Casco Viejo, Panama City
SOURCE: Photo by Alfredo Maiquez, courtesy of Authority of Tourism Panama (all rights reserved), used with permission.
The Metropolitan Cathedral (La Catedral Metropolitana) on La Plaza Mayor displays two distinct architectural styles - Colonial and Neoclassical and its belfries are covered with Mother of pearl veneer which are said to represent the marine riches of Panama.
In June 2004 the new doors of the "Catedral de Panama en el Casco Antiguo de la Ciudad de Panama" were inaugurated.
The new doors were designed to conform to the original doors of the cathedral, and to withstand the climatic conditions of Panama.
