Opera Ball, Vienna
SOURCE: Osterreich Werbung/Lammerhuber, courtesy of Austrian National Tourist Office, used with permission.
Perhaps nothing epitomizes the elegance and charm of Vienna as does its famous ball season. The highlight of the season is the world-famous Vienna State Opera Ball.
Presided over by the President of Austria and attended by royalty, diplomats, international celebrities, literati and glitterati, the ball is also a spectacular coming out party for debutantes from Vienna and abroad.
In 1877, the Emperor gave permission for a soiree in his Opera House and the grand opera ball tradition began. Held during Fasching, the weeks between New Year’s and Mardi Gras, the ball season is a time of high excitement and elaborate planning. The annual State Opera Ball attracts visitors from all over the world. Formal attire is de rigueur: long ball gowns for women, white tie and tails for men.
